Kassoumail, a nickname that says a lot !

Kassoumail is the name that Jocelyne Pétiard chose long ago, during a trip to Casamance that marked her, and that she uses to sign her work. Kassoumail is the word for "welcome" among the Diola people, a fiercely indepentend people and very attached to their ancestors.

And it is this indemendence of mind, a big distance from an art school, the fierce side, found in the art that she practices, close to the Art Brut so dear to à Dubuffet. Because what matters in Jocelyne's productions, whatever the medium and techniques used, it is her artistic approach, the need to confront the matter, to extract from herself the emotions that animate her (so overwhelming at times!) in a process that could be described as cathartic. The aesthetic and technical worries came into play afterwords and even now they ar not a priority. Demanding with herself, sometimes too modest, she has produced numerous and a wide variety of works, sometimes abandoned in the back of the studio, even abused, and discoved with delight by her friends passing by…

Because in this production, sometimes abundant and guided byt emotion, there are real pearls that may arise, works of incredible patiences and attention to detail, when it comes to time paper collages for example, or on the contrary inspired brush strokes and applied with energy on th canvas, with a keen sense of the language of colors. It is always the force that emanates from her works in their apparent diversity. Life in all of its aspects, expressed with a certain "authority" which seems to overtake it's author, as well as an original creative impulse, in the nobel sense of the word, we understand! There is a form of magic in her productions, which in some ways remindes us of the inspired shamans, when we surprise ourselves voyaging far in time and space while looking at them.
